Stocking runs or ladders are caused usually by the stocking material being nicked or caught by some sharp object. Modern nylons are (sadly) very resistant to running. For the life of me I do not know why I find them sexy.
I do know that the first time I heard Joni Mitchell's "Help Me" with the line:
You dance with the lady
With the hole in her stocking
Didnt it feel good
Didnt it feel good
... I was hooked on the idea.
